6 Reasons a Short Online Video is Better Than a Long One
You might be thinking about using video for your business and if you don't know where to start there are lots of things to consider. Lots of our clients will come to us asking for a 'short video' and then when they follow that up with 'about 10 minutes' it very likely ellicits a sharp intake of breath on our behalf.
Let me explain. A ten minute video is not a short video in the online world. Yes, compared to a TV program or a film, ten minutes seems short but the prime length for an online video is more like 30 seconds to a minute, especially for a business video and here's why:
1. You Keep the Attention of Your Audience
People are quite impatient online. Most will initially look at the run time of a video before even clicking play, so you need to make a good impression from the offset.
Statistics show that people are willing to give video 2.7 minutes of their time. That's a lot more time than someone will give to a chunk of text, so video wins in that respect but it also means if your video is nice and short, it's more likely to get through to your audience and they will stick around.
2. It's About Quality Not Quantity
A long video does not necessarily maketh a good video (I think Aristotle said that.) There is a viral video that is a mere 7 seconds long featuring a 'wimpy goat' bleating (if you don't know it, go and watch it right now). It was uploaded one week ago and it currently has over 2 million views.
The actual physical quality of the video is terrible but the content is so funny and engaging, that is what makes it a quality video. It is the perfect length and delivers right away and that is what you need to do in video for business.
3. It Forces You To Keep Your Message Simple
Get straight to the point. You may know exactly what your business is about but prospective customers don't so you have to get your message across in the simplest way. It's easy to waffle if you are pitching face to face with someone but with a video you have time to hone your message and keep it simple.
People like simple.
4. Intrigue Your Audience and Leave Them Wanting More
Please Sir, can I have some more? This sums up a good video in one, the best videos are the ones you wish wouldn't end so instead you watch them again and again. Of course, this is easier to apply to funny viral videos than a business video but if you can leave your audience with a taste for you and some intrigue, you're on the right track.
5. Shorter Video is More Shareable
In the same way that people are more likely to watch a short video, it also makes them more likely to share it. Nobody wants to be that person who made their friends sit through a long video, it's just not cricket.
P.S. Sorry if this GIF made you hungry.
6. Keeps Costs Down
If you are paying someone to make a video, you're probably going to want to do it as cheaply as possible. Editing a video can take a long time and time costs money, so keep your filming time to a minimum and the pounds will look after themselves...
(Yeah, I know that's not how the saying goes.)
